The Nairobi Arboretum Conservancy Community Forest Association (NACCFA) was founded in 2019 to help protect and manage The Nairobi Arboretum, a vital urban forest and green space in Nairobi, Kenya. NACCFA is a Community Forest Association (CFA), which is a legal entity established under Kenyan law to give communities a voice in the management of their forests.

NACCFA works closely with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), the government agency responsible for managing forests in Kenya. Under a Joint Forest Management Agreement (JFMA) with KFS, NACCFA is a full partner in the management and conservation of the Nairobi Arboretum. The JFMA is a ground-breaking agreement that gives NACCFA a significant role in decision-making and implementation related to the Conservancy.

The JFMA covers a wide range of areas, including security, conservation, education, and recreation. NACCFA is responsible for managing the beautification, as well as carrying out reforestation and resource management activities. NACCFA also plays a leading role in developing the Nursery and delivering educational and recreational programs in the Park.

The JFMA is a major milestone for stakeholder citizen involvement in the joint stewardship of important national resources. It is a model for other communities in Kenya and around the world that are looking to work together with governments to protect and manage their forests.

Our Goal

The goal of the Nairobi Arboretum Conservancy Community Forest Association (NACCFA) is “To maintain and enhance the trust and confidence of the Public and build understanding and support for the delivery of objectives.

Our Approach

Our major priority is to establish the Arboretum as a safe urban park where people can come and appreciate nature and its serenity. We aim to achieve this by promoting Arts & Culture and Sports & Entertainment which will showcase the Arboretum as a recreational park. It is also equally important that we support Research, Education and Training initiatives of staff in the area, to take advantage of the Arboretum’s rich biodiversity. Our plans to enrich the biodiversity are enhanced by our Tree Nursery and Seedling Production Area. Another key pillar is the improvement of infrastructure through maintenance and upgrade.

These efforts are to maintain the integrity of one of the few remaining green spaces in Nairobi, considering the rapid urbanization of the surrounding areas.
