The Nairobi Arboretum

The Nairobi Arboretum was established in 1907 by Mr. E Batiscombie, the Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests, as a 30.4 hectares site for exotic tree species trials. It is an emblematic space located in the center of Nairobi next to the State House.

Nairobi Arboretum was gazetted in 1932.
It is distinguished by a collection of 330 tree species planted in park-like patterns.
Since its founding the Nairobi Arboretum has been under the management of the Forest Department (FD) and now Kenya Forest Service.
It was managed effectively for many decades, but from the 1970s till the early 1990s management levels declined due to increasingly inadequate government funding.

Nairobi Arboretum Conservancy CFA

Nairobi Arboretum Conservancy – NAC was founded in November 2019 by a group of stakeholders, lead by Carlotta Dal Lago, to restore, manage, and enhance Arboretum in partnership with the public and in collaboration with KFS.
Main Objectives
- To establish and revitalized Arboretum as a museum of living plant collections and environment-friendly public amenity;
- To maintain both the infrastructure and the living collection to a high standard;
- To play a significant role as a member of local and international network of complementary institutions, in the conservation and research of plant biodiversity, plant resilience in urban environment and climate change with the aim of protecting and preserving them;
- To provides an effective programme of environmental, resilience and climate change education and awareness, for schools, colleges and the general public;
- To have a sound financial base and the capability to raise significant contributions to running costs from income-generating activities.

NAC work is founded on the belief that citizen leadership and private partnerships are key to ensuring that the Park and its essential purpose endure.
