Tree Description

There are contradictory stories about where I originated from. Initially many believed that I originated in Ecuador and Peru. However, more recent evidence suggests that I originated from Central America. Currently, you will most likely find me in subtropical regions around the world. My appearance changes as I mature. When I am young, I am a pale green colour, and as I grow my colour becomes more pigmented and I gain more fruits. My Cherimoya fruits are what I am most known for. Most popular for their sweet and aromatic features in South Asia where they are consumed. My flowers are also unique in their ecology. I have a short life span which I begin as a female and then evolve into a male in a matter of hours when I first bloom. I grow optimally in altitudes between 1,500 and 2000 metres and an annual temperature of between 18°C and 20°C. This is also supported by high annual precipitation of >800 mm and soils with high sand content and acidic properties. I was introduced to the arboretum during the initiative to include more exotic plants in the early 1900s and I continue to be a part of the forest. Even though the conditions in Kenya do not exactly fit the parameters needed for me to grow, I still manage to thrive in this environment.
